What is Letterpress Printing?
Letterpress is a printing technique that embeds the artwork into the paper. The plates used in letterpress printing are called relief plates, meaning that the image area to be printed is raised from the surface of the plate. The press operator meticulously handsets and hard inks the plates that are used to imprint the designs and lettering onto the paper. The letterpress works to sink the image into the surface of the paper, creating a textured, three-dimensional design. For centuries, letterpress was the only method of printing used for reproduction. The process has changed very little over time and is a tedious and labor-intensive craft that requires the utmost attention to detail, but the result is a product with a distinct and tactile quality unsurpassed by other printing methods.
What is Offset Printing?
Offset printing provides an economical option while keeping style in tact. This process uses a printing plate to transfer the ink flat onto the surface of the paper. On the press, the plate is dampened, first by water rollers, then by ink rollers. Ink adheres to the image area and water to the non-image area. As the cylinders rotate, the image is transferred to the blanket. Paper passes between the blanket cylinder and the image is transferred to the paper.
What is Thermography?
Thermography uses heat to raise the print above the surface of the paper. It is a five-stage process that applies a slow drying ink and deposits a resin on the wet ink and heats it, resulting in a raised image. This process gives an engraved appearance at an affordable price.
What is Digital Printing?
Digital printing involves outputting directly from an electronic file, with no intermediate film stage. Digital color presses use electrophotography and print with toners or special inks, and all of them are capable of sheet to sheet personalization of images and text, commonly known as variable-data printing. The ink toner is not absorbed into the paper as in other processes, but forms a layer on the surface. It is a more environmentally conscious printing option because it requires less waste of chemicals and paper wasted in setup.
